A Fall Exterior Checklist for Columbus Homes

Ohio winters are hard on a house, and the damage rarely starts in January. It starts in the fall, with the clogged gutter, the soft fascia board, and the loose fence post that nobody dealt with before the freeze. A couple hours of attention in October and November prevents the expensive calls in March. Here is the exterior checklist we recommend to homeowners across west Columbus, and what to look for on each item.

Gutters and Downspouts First

Gutters are the top priority because everything downstream depends on them. Once the leaves finish dropping, gutters need clearing so that melting snow and winter rain have somewhere to go. A clogged gutter overflows against your fascia and foundation, and when standing water in a gutter freezes, the weight strains every hanger holding it. While you are at it, check that downspouts actually carry water away from the house instead of dumping it at the foundation. Homes under heavy tree cover may need a second pass.

Fascia and Soffit: The Quiet Trouble Spots

The fascia boards behind your gutters and the soffit under your roof overhang are where water damage hides. Walk the house and look up. Peeling paint, dark staining, sagging sections, or gaps are all signs that water has been getting where it should not, and gaps also invite pests looking for a warm winter home. Fascia and soffit repairs are quick, straightforward jobs in the fall. Left alone through a freeze-thaw winter, the rot spreads and the repair grows with it.

Fences, Gates, and the Yard

Frozen ground locks fence posts in place, which is good news for a solid fence and bad news for a leaning one, because a post that goes into winter loose comes out worse. Push on your posts, check gate hinges and latches, and look for boards that have pulled free. Wind is what takes fences down, and winter has plenty of it. Finish by clearing leaves away from the foundation and out of window wells, where they hold moisture against the house all season.

Knock It Out Before the Freeze

Everything on this list shares two traits: it is quick to fix in the fall, and expensive to ignore until spring. This is also exactly the kind of work that batches well into a single visit, gutters cleared, a fascia section repaired, a fence post reset, all in one stop. Walk your house with your phone, photograph anything that looks off, and text the pictures to (614) 654-1349. We will quote the list and get it handled before winter does.
