Gutters and Downspouts First

While you are at it, check that downspouts actually carry water away from the house instead of dumping it at the foundation. Homes under heavy tree cover may need a second pass.
Fascia and Soffit: The Quiet Trouble Spots
The fascia boards behind your gutters and the soffit under your roof overhang are where water damage hides. Walk the house and look up. Peeling paint, dark staining, sagging sections, or gaps are all signs that water has been getting where it should not, and gaps also invite pests looking for a warm winter home. Fascia and soffit repairs are quick, straightforward jobs in the fall. Left alone through a freeze-thaw winter, the rot spreads and the repair grows with it.
Fences, Gates, and the Yard
Frozen ground locks fence posts in place, which is good news for a solid fence and bad news for a leaning one, because a post that goes into winter loose comes out worse. Push on your posts, check gate hinges and latches, and look for boards that have pulled free. Wind is what takes fences down, and winter has plenty of it. Finish by clearing leaves away from the foundation and out of window wells, where they hold moisture against the house all season.
