A typical homeowner's repair list mixes jobs together without sorting them first, and figuring out who actually handles what saves a lot of wasted calls. Some repairs sit squarely in handyman territory. Some need a licensed specialist no matter how small they look. And a good number sit in between, depending on what is actually going on once someone opens things up. Here is how we sort that list on a normal week.
What a Handyman Covers
Fixture swaps, drywall patches, carpentry repairs, door and trim work, minor plumbing like a faucet or a running toilet, gutters, fences, and general punch-list items all fall inside what a handyman does every day. These are jobs where the skill is broad and hands-on rather than tied to a license, and a good handyman touches all of these trades regularly enough to do them right the first time. If the job is visible, contained, and does not involve rewiring a panel or moving gas, it is almost certainly ours.
Where Licensing Draws a Real Line
Some jobs need a licensed specialist regardless of how small they look, and that line does not move. Electrical panel work, new circuits, and anything touching a breaker box belongs to a licensed electrician. Gas line work belongs to a licensed plumber or gas fitter. Structural changes, like removing or altering a load-bearing wall, need an engineer's eyes before anyone swings a hammer. These are not judgment calls. They are code, and a contractor who tells you otherwise is one to walk away from.
The Gray Area Jobs
Most of the calls that confuse people live in the middle. A ceiling fan install is usually a handyman job, until the box behind it turns out to be unrated or the wiring is decades old, at which point it becomes an electrician's call. A water heater flush or a minor valve repair is ours, but a full tank replacement on old, corroded supply lines can turn into a bigger plumbing job than it looked from the kitchen. The honest answer with these is that nobody knows for certain until someone gets eyes on it, which is exactly why we look before we quote.
